Do please leave comments and feedback to let us know how you are getting on, or if you have suggestions from your own experience.

If you attended the Hope 08 launch at Methodist Central Hall almost a fortnight ago we hope that you enjoyed it and found it helpful and inspirational. We were delighted with the number of churches in the area that were represented at the event and we believe that there is great enthusiasm to move ahead with projects that will spread the gospel through word and action.

If you were unable to attend the launch we hope that your church will still wish to be involved. The main message of the evening was that doing just one new thing well can make a huge difference in our locality. The stories that we heard and the information that was given highlighted this theme. Some small churches are already making a big impact in their community.

We wish to publicise Hope 08 around the area as much as possible. 40 banners were taken away from the launch event to place outside churches (if you took one please put it up as soon as possible!). We have 20 more available. The initial banner is free and will be in place up to Easter. There will be three more banners over the course of the year that reflect the changing national themes of Hope 08 as the year unfolds. These will cost £40 each and we hope that churches will sign up for the banners so that the Hope 08 theme remains in people’s minds throughout the year. If you would like one of the initial banners please collect it from the Bible Outlet, 67 Wright Street, Hull or phone John Morris (07504239664), who will arrange for one to be delivered to you. There are also car stickers available.

Please also check the Google Calendar which has been updated to reflect the events we know about in the local area associated with Hope 2008. If you are hosting an event not shown please get in touch and we will add it to the calendar.

Please don’t forget that we have a Google Calendar of events and if you are running an event and would like it included just get in touch or leave a comment.

The Red Cross have funds available for people looking to run an event or start an initiative to help those affected by flooding in our area. This fits well with Hope 2008 and might be the source of funds your initiative needs. The way to find out more is to contact Hull CVS (details follow). I have copied below an email that I received this week:

British Red Cross flood relief money available to communities for social activities

Hull CVS are actively seeking groups of flood-hit residents to apply for up to £1000 (or possibly more, by negotiation) towards social activities. Recently, monies have been granted to fund a kids’ football club, a trip out for a local women’s centre, a Christmas party and line dancing sessions.
The application process is straight forward and we can advise you on any aspect of this, should you need some support.

For further information and an application form, please contact Mike Scott on 01482 324474 or email mscott@hull-cvs.co.uk

I came across a thought provoking post today about the shock of the incarnation of Christ – or rather the lack of shock we now feel. It speaks of being born into a place where there is no hope and it reminded me that there are places like this all around us. Places where people are resigned to making nothing very much of their lives, resigned to just existing. And then I thought, “Isn’t that what Hope 2008 is all about”? Bringing hope to the hopeless and showing them that there is another way. Who will you bring hope to in 2008? When you look back this time next year will you be able to say that you have really made a difference?

big explosion The youth branch of Hope 08 for the Hull area have now published a list of hope 08 youth events that you can get involved with.

Why not print off the pdf document to circulate to your young people and leaders to spread the word? It only works if we do it together.

Below you’ll find an image and a quote both of which brought fresh hope to me; I hope they do to you as well. If you have any inspiring quotes or pictures on the hope theme either post them as comments or email them to me and we’ll get them on the blog.

If you lose hope, somehow you lose the vitality that keeps life moving, you lose that courage to be, that quality that helps you go on in spite of it all. And so today I still have a dream.

Martin Luther King JR
