york-minster.jpg York Minster will play host to one of the regional launches of Hope 2008 on New Year’s Eve. This exciting event will be a night of prayer, worship and celebration, with performances from both local and well known Christian bands including Y-Friday, The Strides and Gleam of Dawn. Andy Hawthorne – one of the instigators of hope08 – will speak encouraging all to get involved and revitalise their communities with the Gospel.

Why not do something different this New Year’s Eve then? Take a group to this event, organise coaches from your area – let your young people know about it – and bring a bit of hope into the the country!

Further details available from the Hope 2008 website or the York Schools and Youth Trust.

News about hope08 is starting to trickle out into the general arena. Dave Walker of  Cartoon Church fame who has a very widely read blog on all things Christian has published a post about hope08. In his post he says that he is somewhat skeptical but would like to support hope08. He asks 4 questions and invites comments, he says this:

“I still need a bit of convincing over ‘Hope 08′, so this is your chance, if you are involved in some way, to convince me and others of my ilk. In particular:

  • What will be different about Hope 08 that will make it better than all the other large Christian initiatives I have known?
  • What is going to actually happen?
  • Aren’t there lots of churches already doing these things?
  • Do big huge Christian initiatives actually do any good?”

I think his questions bear reflecting on for all of us. Not because hope08 isn’t a good thing but because it’s good to have thought things through. Of course having thought them through we can pop over to Dave Walkers blog and post our reflections in his comments section; I’ll be thinking and praying through my response…

engaging with hope08

There was a meeting today at the octagon centre in hull to explore how local churches can engage with hope08. We heard from Steve Clifford, National Chairman for hope08 and Paul Hendy, National Flood Response coordinator. It proved to be an excellent opportunity to hear what was happening and to network with others hoping to take part in hope08.

resource bookSteve Clifford mentioned the “Great Ideas” book from hope08 that is full of (unsurprisingly) great ideas to help you and your church get hope08 off the ground and keep momentum throughout the year. This book is available for £2 a copy by telephoning the publisher direct on 08704 208188 and quoting reference number HPC8. Usually the cost would be £2.99 per copy. You can visit the publishers website by clicking on the image to the left.

The next meeting for church leaders and/or representatives wanting to get involved is on Saturday November 3rd at the Endsleigh Centre, Beverley High Road between 10:00am and 12:00pm.

community initiatives budget

I discovered the existence of the Community Initiatives Budget this week. I quote from Hull Councils criteria document:

The Community Initiatives Budget is an annual sum of (currently) £1.34 million which is made available from Hull City Council core funds.

This provision gives local authorities the power to do anything to promote the social, environmental and economic well being of their area provided that it is not expressly prohibited by law.

I was told by a local councillor that this money could be awarded for projects in the local community; this means we can tap in to it to fund projects in our areas for Hope 08! For example one idea on Victoria Dock, where I am, is to paint some railings along South Bridge Road to improve the look of the street. Obviously we need to formally apply for this funding but verbally I was told we stood a good chance of securing funding for such a project. Clearly, given the size of the overall budget, it should be possible to secure funding for much larger projects. For more information, including the application form and guidance notes see Hull City Council’s Website.
